Youth as Change Agents: How Young Nigerians Are Shaping Democracy

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria

Democracy is not merely a system of governance; it is a living, breathing entity that thrives on the active participation and collective efforts of its citizens. In Nigeria, young people have emerged as the driving force behind the nation’s democratic progress. With their passion, resilience, and innovative approaches, they have become change agents, reshaping the political landscape and advocating for a more inclusive and just society. As we celebrate Democracy Day today, it is fitting to explore how young Nigerians are shaping the country’s democracy.

1. Grassroots Activism
Across Nigeria, young people are leading grassroots movements that tackle pressing societal issues. The recent #EndSARS movement serves as a powerful example of this. The movement, initiated by Nigerian youth, called for an end to police brutality and corruption. Through decentralised protests, online campaigns, and community organising, these young change agents gained widespread attention, both nationally and internationally, sparking discussions on governance, accountability, and citizen participation. In so doing, they showcased the power of collective action in a truly democratic style.

2. Political Engagement
Young Nigerians are breaking barriers and actively engaging in political processes. Many have run for public office, refusing to be passive bystanders in decision-making. The Not Too Young to Run Act 2018 has expanded the opportunities for youth participation in public office. In the 2019 elections, 34% of the candidates on the ballot were youth, while in the 2023 elections, the figure was 28.6%. Furthermore, under Yiaga Africa and UNDP’s #ThePowerOf18 project, young Nigerians mobilised their peers to register, collect their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs), and vote during the 2023 general elections. FYCI is proud to have collaborated with Yiaga Africa and UNDP under phase 3 of this project, using the creative arts to mobilise residents of the FCT to collect their PVCs and vote. These collective efforts in participating in the electoral process, both as voters and candidates, exemplify the unwavering spirit of Nigerian youth in shaping their democracy.

3. Digital Activism
The rise of digital technology and social media platforms has provided young Nigerians with powerful tools to amplify their voices and mobilise for change. Online activism has become a significant force, enabling young people to connect, share information, and raise awareness about critical issues. Through digital campaigns and hashtags, young Nigerians are demanding accountability, promoting social justice, and challenging the status quo. Their digital activism has proven instrumental in shaping public opinion and pushing for policy reforms. Examples of digital campaigns led by Nigerian youth are #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS.

4. Youth-Led NGOs
Young Nigerians have also been driving change by leading non-governmental organisations (NGOs) dedicated to democratic advocacy and social change. These youth-led NGOs are leveraging their creativity, expertise, and collaborative spirit to address a wide range of societal challenges. Whether it is promoting gender equality, advocating for human rights, or driving sustainable development, these organisations are empowering young people and providing platforms for them to actively contribute to democratic progress. Yiaga Africa, Kimpact Development Initiative, and FYCI are examples of youth-led, youth-focused NGOs in Nigeria.

5. Innovative Solutions
Young Nigerians are harnessing their entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking to develop solutions that address societal issues. From technology startups that tackle corruption to social enterprises that empower marginalised communities, young innovators are using their skills to create sustainable and impactful ventures. Examples are AdvoKC, a youth-led organisation that uses technology to help citizens track governance performance and promote accountability, and TechHer, a social enterprise that empowers women with skills and opportunities in tech. Their innovative solutions not only address immediate challenges but also pave the way for long-term systemic change, fostering a culture of innovation within Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

These five areas highlight the incredible determination, resilience, and unwavering belief of Nigerian youth in the power of democracy. They demonstrate that age is not a barrier to leadership or effecting meaningful change. As youth-led initiatives continue to flourish, it is evident that young Nigerians are actively shaping the future of their nation by advocating for social justice, demanding accountability, and championing democratic values. Their actions serve as an inspiration for generations to come, reinforcing the notion that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today. With their continued dedication and active participation, the democratic landscape in Nigeria will undoubtedly be transformed, creating a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous society for all.

Happy Democracy Day!
